"The cloud itself is a set of hardwae, networks, storage, services, and interfaces that enable the delivery of computing as a service. Cloud services include the delivery of software, infrastructure, and storage over the internet (either as separate components or a complete platform) based on user demand....
"Cloud serveces like social networks (such as Facebook or Linkedln) and colaboration tools (like video conferencing, document management, or webinars) are changing the way people in business access, deliver, and understnad information. Cloud computing infrastructures make it easier for companies to treat their computing systems as a pool of resources rather than a set of independent environments that each has to be managed." (page 9)
Several large business have moved their customer connections to the cloud - companies such as Amazon and Google. Services that bill you as you choose items, such as when you buy something through Amazon or download Google Apps to make your computer more personalized and fun.
The cloud also allows room in a business for expansion, improvement, or even spikes in service (such as Amazon's Christmas rush) while providing a good platform for security & expansion
Some of the internet-based programs the book mentioned were Amazon, Facebook, Flickr, GoDaddy, Google Apps, Linux web hosting, Java, Microsoft Live services, Paypal, Podcast, Skype, Sun Microsystem, Twitter, Wikipedia, Yahoo Mail, & YouTube. Just knowing how these programs work from a user standpoint tells us much about what the cloud is and how it works.
