Keep Up the Stockpile

On the one hand, I hate it when "experts" list the things to keep on hand.  On the other hand, it seems to be a good starting point for me.  I completely understand the idea of keeping a stock pile - we live in a new development area & our nearest grocery store is 7 miles away!  If you run out of milk in the morning before breakfast, it is a real pain to have to run up to the store to get it!  My goal is to have another of whatever we are currently using - that way, I can "shop" my stock, & replace at my leisure.

Anyway, This is MY stockpile - yours will probably be different!  Just look around your home & decide what you usually have on hand - & what you miss when you run out.  Change the brand names, items, or ideas to suit you and your needs.

Most published lists do not include non-food items, but to me, you are ignoring a large part of the "food budget"!  Therefore, my list begins with the stuff I need on hand to keep myself and my house clean & running smoothly.  I was very surprised at how much I stock - I took this list directly from my shelves, drawers, cabinets, and cupboards!

Master Bathroom - we have a fairly large bathroom, so have room to store a lot of what we use in the cupboards & cabinets.
Alcohol swabs - I use these when I put earrings in my ears, otherwise, my sensitive ears are read and sore

Amway deodorant - you will notice that we use a lot of Amway products - I was very skeptical at first, but now LOVE them - the idea of going back to the grocery store brands is quite distasteful to me - I tried each item with a large scoop of disbelief, & was surprised and thrilled with the results!

Peas

Frozen meats - almost all my recipes call for just 1 lb of meat, so I buy in bulk, then divide and freeze in 1 lb containers
Bacon
Beef roast
Bratwurst
Chicken breasts - I (and therefore the whole family) have gotten spoiled & really don't like the dark meats - I finally quit buying the cheaper dark cuts of chicken & turkey because no one really likes them at our house & they don’t get eaten.
Hamburger
Pepperoni slices (for pizza)
Pork chops
Pork roast
Steaks - Usually, we will pre-spice them, so they marinate as they thaw
Sweet Italian Sausage (for pizza)

Frozen "lunches"
Since there are only 3 of us at home, & my recipes serve 4, I put the leftovers in a lunch container along with whatever the meal needs to be complete.  These get a masking tape label with what it is, then their own shelf in the freezer.  Everyone knows that if they are hungry & Mom isn't cooking, this is available.  Occasionally - especially when this stock gets low, I will also spend a day cooking meals just to go in this stockpile.  This is not the place to experiment - I find that favorite meals get used quickly, while experiments or unusual meals get freezer burn and eventually thrown away.

  1. Wow! What a list. I think I might use your idea--that of putting EVERYthing on a stockpile list instead of just ordinary pantry items.
