Mock Interview

Taylor and I finally were able to coordinate our busy schedules and do our mock interview.  We hadn't really met before we sat down together, so we spent a little time getting to know each other, then on to our interviews.  It went well, I think, for both of us, but I learned some things about myself.

I learned that I need to do more "PAR" stories on myself - Problem, Action, Result - where I was successful in solving a problem.

I learned that I need to practice an "elevator speech" about myself - just a two-minute introduction of myself for when an interviewer asks me to tell about myself.

I learned that an interviewer - and the interviewee - shift into a different mode during the interview - more formal & specific.  I need to remember that my impression of the culture of a company will probably not be well-reflected in the first interview.

The job that I chose to write my resume for is probably not one that I would actually apply for - first and foremost, it is in Washington, D.C., where we have conscientiously chosen not to live near.  It has its appeals, though - it is an Educational Specialist at the Library of Congress.  After 18 1/2 years of HomeSchooling our children and being involved in the HomeSchool world, I think I could do it.  I guess it goes back to the idea of 10,000 hours creates proficiency.  It's fun to dream ... :-)
